How did you get into wedding photography?
Joe has always been a photographer. He used to work for an advertising agency. When he met Kathleen, they began shooting weddings for friends, and then they shot more and more weddings and it evolved into JoPhoto.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
Our favorite part of the day is when the bride and groom see each other for the first time.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
We were photographing an outdoor wedding and reception and the bride and groom did not have a rain back-up plan. It began pouring rain 20 minutes before the ceremony, and rained all night long. They ended up getting married in the pouring rain holding umbrellas, and the reception was flooded in mud and guests had to squeeze inside their family’s house to stay dry.
What is your favorite venue and why?
Our favorite weddings are small weddings with just a few people in a lovely natural location such as the mountains, on the lake, in the family’s back yard, or a waterfall.
Nikon or Canon?
Contax 645 because we shoot film. When we shoot digital, it is Canon.
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
Our dream location to shoot a wedding would be in Ireland. We are full of wanderlust, and we’ve always loved seeing photos of the coasts in Ireland. The history and beauty of the country is just amazing and beautiful!
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
It would definitely be Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila. Of course, this is because of his style, personality, and how photogenic he is, but it’s also because of his passion for animals and his foundation dedicated to helping teenage kids.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Some of the keys to being a successful wedding photographer include great customer service, patience, a good eye, and solid business skills.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
When looking for a photographer, find one who you fully trust to capture your wedding day and who you can see spending the entire wedding day with. Photographers are the one professional you hire for your wedding who will be with you the most on your wedding day, so you want to be comfortable and yourself around them.
