Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Rodolphe Lamare of Photos by Rudy, based in Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Mauritius! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
I’ve had, as a wedding photographer in Mauritius since about 20 years, the extreme honor of photographing couples from all over the world here in Mauritius, in the Seychelles, Africa and Indian Ocean and each one of them proves for me time and time again what a wonderful gift this has been. I love the ability to preserve memories that couples and their families will treasure for many years to come in a very natural, modern, elegant, romantic and cinematic way.

How did you get into wedding photography?
As an Accredited Architectural Specialized photographer working for International groups of 5* Hotels, I had the opportunity to shoot weddings in those resorts and I naturally shifted to that work, bringing the accuracy in term of light and color as well as the extreme sense of the details architecture and interior design require to produce high-end wedding photographs out of the common.
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
Though I love capturing every part of a wedding, the preparation of the bride as well as the moment when they have said “yes” and feel more relax and more “open” to the photographer’s presence are the moments I prefer best. Shooting a beautiful sunset with a lovely relaxed newlywed couple is a must.
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
I remember the day I asked my assistant to pack the car with all the gears and arriving at the hotel for the wedding, he simply forgot to put the camera bag in. I did all the wedding with the disposable camera of the resort and the couple didn’t even notice that. Gladly the couple was happy with the photos!!
What is your favorite venue and why?
My favorite venue is definitely the south of the Island with its pristine large immaculate beaches and the mountains in the back, and this is where the sunsets are the most beautiful, over the large crystal clear lagoon.
Nikon or Canon?
I started decades ago with a Canon EOS 1V (film camera) and shifted to Nikon when the digital era came. Now and since years I use MFT Olympus. Shooting as an official “paparazzi” it is discreet enough and allows me to shoot with the natural available light. Anyway this is definitely not the camera that makes the photographer!!!
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?
I don’t have a dream location; every single place offers an opportunity to shoot stunning pictures if we pay attention of the composition and the elements to play with.
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
The lucky couple is the one I shoot every single time, as they are the star and celebrities of the day!!!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Every single wedding, we must start from scratch and do not try to copy the previous one as every single wedding is different. Learn from other photographers without copying their style and their techniques, but rely on their experience. Spend hours on internet to see what the new tendency is so you don’t get stuck with “old fashion” photography.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Never select a photographer by “mouth to ear” or “word of mouth” advice, as it is your wedding and your everlasting memory, not theirs. Compare the quality of the pictures and not only the best offer in term of cash, make sure that on the photos, the very expensive dress you are proud of is not completely blown up, pay attention to the natural colors and the balance of light, the background, the composition, the interest and purpose of the photo, the heavy presence of a unbalanced light due to the use of powerful flash when unnecessary , that if you flew long hours to be on a paradisiac beach the sand and the beach are not “all white” and blown up and inexistent. Real quality has a price!! Especially for lifetime memories!
