Today’s photographer interview is with Joanna Carina of Carina Photographics, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I grew up with a strong love of photography, minored in it in college, and practiced it as a hobby for years. My first big job was as a graphic designer and I would art direct commercial shoots. Then 5 years ago I changed careers and opened my own portrait and wedding photography business. I absolutely love it.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I was a little intimidated by them at first, but after a few friends asked me to photograph their weddings, I was hooked.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

I love when couples opt for a first look session before they walk down the aisle. I love seeing their raw emotions and intense love they have for each other. I am always grinning ear to ear as I photograph this moment!

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

The time a couple asked a friend, who was another photographer, to also capture their day, while assuring me that “he’ll stay out of your way.” He didn’t stay out of my way and wouldn’t move when requested and made things extra challenging for me. Needless to say, I’ve added a “no other photographers” clause in my contract now!

What is your favorite venue and why?

That’s a tough one! A few favorites are: Aria for the gorgeous, urban, modern-meets-rustic ambiance; MN Landscape Arboretum for unparalleled garden ceremony sites; and The Landmark Center for its epic, classic architecture.

Nikon or Canon?

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding? France…anywhere in France!

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple? Prince William and Kate Middleton

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Don’t worry so much about how others brand themselves, price themselves, or position themselves in the marketplace. Highlight how you are different and stay true to yourself!

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

Along with your ring and your spouse, the only things you will have left from your wedding day are your photographs. Choose the best photographer you can afford, and resist the urge to price-shop to get the cheapest one around. Also, make sure you receive more than just a jumble of images on a disc – work with a photographer who can create a beautiful, custom, heirloom photo album that you can enjoy now and pass down through your family for generations.
