How did you get into wedding photography?

Kind of a crazy story.  One day, we were hanging out with some friends and one of our friends decided to show us a wedding dress that she found at a second hand store for $1.  Naturally, Melissa decided to put on the wedding dress and I thought it would be funny to take some pictures.  We laughed and posted them on Facebook, and then about a month later our first bride contacted us to ask us if we shoot weddings. The rest is history, as they say.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

My favorite part of the wedding day are the preparations, I feel like that´s when people are really themselves, among family and friends.  The excitement mixed with all the laughs and happy tears that happen before the wedding are real, genuine moments and we feel really lucky that people allow us to capture such vulnerable moments of their day.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

Once we had a bride that was really worried about fitting into her dress (it was very form fitting and tailored to her body).  I was in the room alone with her and her mother, and at some point they realized that they were going to need some type of powder to be able to slide the dress up, so there was about a 10 minute period where I was in the dressing room with a stark-naked bride and her mother who were frantically looking for powder to help slip the dress on.  Obviously, I stopped taking pictures, but was a bit stuck as to whether I should leave or not.  The bride was not shy, but I must have been red-faced for that entire 10 minutes.

What is your favorite venue and why?

I have to say that I love the challenges that come along with different venues.  These are the kind of challenges that really push me as a photographer and teach me to not get too comfortable.  But if I had to choose, I´d have to say that any outside venue is an obvious choice for a photographer, because of the beautiful natural light and natural settings.

Nikon or Canon?

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

Our dream would be to shoot a wedding in Japan, as we love Japanese people and culture (and food). It would be such an interesting experience getting to go there and be part of someone´s wedding.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

Probably John Lennon and Yoko Ono, that would have been cool to be a part of. Plus they had super cool style.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

The biggest lesson that we´ve learned is to just stick to our own style. We started out trying to emulate so many different photogs and kept getting down on ourselves for not being exactly like them or not as ¨good¨ as them.  We realized that your style is something you grow into rather than copy from other photographers. There´s nothing wrong with being inspired by others, but having your own personal way of doing things is what makes you and your business unique and special.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

Find someone that you´re comfortable having a coffee with, someone that you can trust and makes you feel confident. You´ll end up feeling more relaxed on your wedding day and it will show in the photos. Finally, don´t be afraid to tell them what you want or what you think.  You´ll only be making their jobs harder by making them guess which side is your good side or how many photos you want of their quirky DIY details, etc.
