Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Elie Bernager of Un Mariage au Paradis, based in Tamarin, Mauritius! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company

I am a professional photographer since 35 years and I always share the same and real pleasure of photography with my clients. After having worked for Marie-Claire group in Paris for more than 15 years, I started to produce ‘lifestyle and beauty’ photography for Getty Images. Settled since 10 years in Mauritius and Seychelles, I am now joyfully focused on wedding photography. I work on my own and my wife Céline works alongside me by taking care of the photo editing.

How did you get into wedding photography?

Just by chance, by being the wedding photographer of my friends Esmeralda and Frederique settled in Mauritius. During the shooting, I felt immense joy and I received a huge positive energy during this memorable event. I then decided to get into a wonderful career of wedding photographer.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

I love doing glamorous portraits of the bride and I enjoy group photos a lot. I then consider myself as a stage director. I love the trust that the newlyweds put in me. I like how attentive they are when you explain to them how to pose. Not to forget: I’ve been working for more than 20 years as fashion photographer (Marie Claire group, Cosmo, Biba…). I love talking to my clients.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

I photographed over 700 weddings and I have nothing but nice anecdotes to report. I make sure that both the bride and groom are comfortable and that no awkward moments ruin the photo session.

What is your favorite venue and why?

I absolutely love the beaches of Mauritius, particularly Le Morne beach. The scenery is magnificent; the lagoon is splendid and crystalline. Each and every day a romantic sunset is waiting for you.

Nikon or Canon?

These are just tools, I use both. There is no significant difference between the two brands. It’s just a matter of taste. The two brands have developed very similar cameras. When I was a fashion photographer in Paris, I used to work with Nikon and Haselblad cameras.

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

The Moon!!! It’s humour of course. Basically, this means that from my point of view, as a wedding photographer, people are the most important to me; as long as they are here it does not matter where the photos are being taken. Anyway, I love capturing wedding photos in Mauritius, I really do think that I will not find better place, except on the Moon…

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

Lou Salomé & Friedrich Nietzsche

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Love your clients; fall in love with them and see the bride through the eyes of the groom and the groom through the eyes of the bride. This is all you need for an ongoing success.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

Choose the best!!! Choose a photographer that loves creating scenes with loads of spontaneity, humour and dynamism, one with whom newlyweds and honeymooners will enjoy the pleasure of a truly unforgettable photography in a magnificent setting, one who will make sure that your very special time is beautifully captured all throughout your emotional and intimate event. Hire a destination wedding photographer full of surprises, determined to make your wedding day as exceptional as your couple.
