How did you get into wedding planning?
After graduating law school and moving to Chicago in 2005, I realized I had a knack for event planning and décor design. I was living on my own and finally had enough space to host events. My first event was my own house warming party, which amazed my family and friends with its personalized touches and professional presentation. At my family and friends’ requests, I began to plan holiday and birthday parties and became known for my attention to detail, elaborate centerpieces, and unique décor.
As my friends started getting engaged, I fell in love with the details surrounding weddings and how it gives couples a way to express themselves and their love for each other. I spent my free time learning about fabulous wedding décor, unique vows, invitation designs, etiquette and any and everything that had to do with weddings! One summer, a friend who knew that I had a penchant for keeping up with wedding trends, insisted that I help plan her wedding. Helping her plan invigorated me unlike anything I had done before. What I enjoyed most was being able to offer sound advice and handle stressful tasks that not only allowed the bride to keep her focus on her career and life, but also ensured that her wedding would be executed just as she imagined. Seeing how valuable my help was to her was all the motivation I needed to muster up the confidence to follow my dream.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of being a wedding planner is seeing the look on my clients’ faces when they first walk into the reception room and it’s even better than they imagined. It makes the months and long hours of planning all worth it.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to not under price my services. When starting out, you may be tempted to offer your services for free or significantly discounted; however, once you start this trend it will be difficult to stop. You should charge what your skill and time is worth and, as your skill increases, charge accordingly.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
When I’m not working with one of my fabulous clients, I enjoy shopping for makeup and going to spas. I’m the ultimate “girly girl”! I’m still a lawyer to my core so I enjoy watching crime investigation shows as well.
Any great stories from working with a client?
We’ve had the pleasure to work with military brides, professional athletes, celebrities and some of Chicago’s sweetest couples. It’s hard to pick just one good story!
What is your current favorite color combination?
My favorite combination right now is navy, pink and gold. I think it’s very masculine but elegant and high-end at the same time!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love weddings that have lounge sitting. It gives guests an opportunity to mix and mingle outside of the bar or their guest tables.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
Relax and keep everything in perspective. At the end of the day, regardless of how perfect (or not) the wedding day goes, you are married to the person you love and will spend the rest of your life with; that’s most important!
