Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My name is Sarah Parlos and I’m the proud owner of One Fine Day, an event planning company located in the heart of beautiful Connecticut. How did you get into wedding planning?

Out from my mother’s womb I came as a lover of organization, party planning and decor.  My mom was an interior designer at Ethan Allen for years and a perfect host to friends and family.  As a little girl I watched her talk to guests, all while juggling the duties of cooking in the kitchen, perfecting the table top and making sure us kids & my dad were well taken care of. Multi-tasking is in my blood.

Her passions rubbed off on me, and early into my 20’s I began receiving regular requests from friends and family to plan their weddings, showers & parties.  Soon after, I landed a wonderful job that included planning events for a non-profit organization. I stayed with them for 8 years, and picked up a part-time job with a local florist to gain experience with design along the way. A few years down the road, I took a leap of faith and launched One Fine Day. I’m so thankful that I made that decision!

What’s your favorite part of the job?

At every event, my highlight is the big reveal! I look forward to the expression on my clients face as they see the vision come to life. It’s a very rewarding moment that often comes after months of planning and endless hours of work. I love knowing that One Fine Day “hit the target” and made someone’s dream day come true!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

In order to be in this business, you need to LOVE what you do. If you aren’t truly passionate about planning events, don’t become an event planner. There are many stressful moments, so your desire to succeed and the love you have for your career will need to be strong in order to outweigh the challenging days that come with this job. Many vendors and planners are mass producing weddings and events with a bad attitude or they just come across as always rushed, which makes the client feel unimportant. Is it really all about the paycheck, or “cramming” three weddings into one single weekend? Not in my world. I believe that kindness and a genuine heart are just as vitally important to running a successful business, as is keeping good bank records. Seriously.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

Outside of work, I’m a pianist, an avid runner, a “wanna be” cook and I love spending time with my family. Recently, I’ve also been taking on DIY projects, such as building my bed headboard and I’m currently in the middle of building myself an office desk.

Any great stories from working with a client?

Not to share publicly. (wink)

What is your current favorite color combination?

I never get sick of lilac with silver accents. Maybe it has to do with lilacs being my favorite flower? Either way, I adore that color palette.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

Honestly, I would love to see the cheap little favors, that everyone literally throws away, get discarded from events. My opinion is that if you can’t eat, drink or plant it, 95% of guests won’t ever use it. Mini plants, flowers, chocolate, wine, a late night ice cream truck as guests are leaving, or if you’re in NY, a warm pretzel and lemonade. Those are the favors that people truly appreciate and want.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

My best advice for those with or without a planner is the same: It’s all about you, so stop worrying and stressing about what “so and so” are going to think if they don’t receive an invitation, if they aren’t invited to be part of the wedding, or if God forbid, they are seated at table 12, instead of 3. Keep focused and don’t allow so many opinions and people to come in the way of bringing to life the dream day that you and your fiancé truly want! Yes, friends and family are very important, but when you’re talking about a single day in history, are you truly going to allow someone else to run that monumental day in your life? Stick to your guns!
