How did you get into wedding planning?

Before I chose this career, I knew I needed an outlet to show my creativity, use my innate talent for organization & feed my passion for helping others. I have always had a knack for event planning, but my junior year of college is when I really fell in love with this career after job shadowing one of the most revered wedding planners in the Puget Sound. I was so giddy the next day, I went to the bookstore & bought a bunch of wedding planning books! I became a wedding planner because it was the obvious best choice to fit who I am – a organized, creative, detail-driven woman with a passion for helping others and making things pretty.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I love the entire planning process with my clients, but my favorite part of the job would have to be watching the bride and groom have the time of their lives on the dance floor at the wedding reception celebrating with their guests. Their smiles and pure happiness says it all!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

Don’t undervalue your services. It’s easy to think that because you are new that you need to price yourself significantly lower than your competitors who are more established in the business. You may think brides will be attracted to your company because of your low prices, but it may also have the adverse effect. They may wonder why you are priced so low (Do you offer less assistance? Is something missing from your packages? What’s the catch?) and you may attract the kind of bride that you aren’t necessarily hoping to work with. Believe in yourself and what you have to offer prospective clients!

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

In my free time I enjoy reading, CrossFit, catching up on my TV shows (and eating entirely too much popcorn), exploring Seattle’s many restaurants with my husband, dreaming up ways to improve my wedding planning process for my clients and playing with my DSLR camera.

Any great stories from working with a client?

Almost every one of my couples’ wedding ceremonies has brought a tear to my eye because I get to know them well during the planning process. The commitment they make to each other in front of family and friends always gets me! One of my greatest client stories also happens to be a defining moment in my career. In my early days as a wedding planner, I was lucky enough to coordinate the wedding of one of my oldest friends and watch him marry his dream woman. Knowing that I played a small part in their fairy tale “happily ever after” and the feelings of pure joy and satisfaction… that’s what keeps me going and why I love what I do!

What is your current favorite color combination?

I’m currently obsessed with bright color combinations! I’m coordinating a fiesta-themed wedding in May with bright red bridesmaid dresses, turquoise shoes and multi-colored bouquets. Another Wedding Wise couple chose yellow, coral and orange as her colors. In a year dominated by pastels, the bright color schemes are a nice change of pace!

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

Copper is an emerging trend this year and I’d love to see more brides and wedding professionals get creative with the color. From vintage copper candlesticks to rustic Moscow mule mugs to modern copper-colored cakes, there’s a way for every bride to add some copper flare to their wedding day.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

Think seriously about hiring a wedding planner or a day-of coordinator at the very least. Contrary to popular belief, a wedding planner won’t take over your entire wedding and plan it the way SHE wants to. We work alongside you to help YOUR dreams and visions come to life. We can save you a lot of time, countless headaches, and keep you on or under budget while helping you secure the best vendor team.
