Today’s interview is with Toronto based wedding planner Trevor Frankfort, owner of Trevents! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My name is Trevor and I’m the owner and lead planner at Trevents. My specialty is weddings but I also plan corporate events, fundraisers, birthday parties, proposals, the list goes on. I have a great “army” of vendors that I love working with but of course I’m always open to meeting new professionals in the industry. I love meeting new people and I find nothing more rewarding than bringing my clients through the inspiring journey of creating their special day. I am creative, dedicated and passionate and this always shines through my work. What I do is an honour. Did I mention I love what I do?

How did you get into wedding planning?

I have been working on events since the year 2000 (with a couple of breaks throughout the years). I started working on movie themed events during their opening weekend releases at movie theatres across Toronto. After that I worked for North America’s largest consumer Home Show. Due to my background in operations, I am not only creative but also have business and organizational sense. Microsoft Excel and I have a very serious relationship.  Two years ago I planned one of my friends weddings and realized that these are the types of events that I wanted to focus on! I love the idea of helping a couple plan a day that means so much to them.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I’m a big part of something very special, something that my clients will cherish, and talk about, for the rest of their lives.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

I have two quotes that I live by and both happen to be from movies (Can you name which movie they are from?). “If you build it they will come” & “Don’t dream it, be it”. Don’t just sit back and wait for things to happen. You have to take the bull by the horns and go and do it. Don’t stop learning either. Read blogs, magazines, keep on top of the trends. All of this will help you achieve your goals. And listen. Always, ALWAYS listen! Nothing upsets people more than when they feel that you aren’t paying attention.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I LOVE movies. Movies are my favourite way to escape real life. I also love cooking. The prep work relaxes me. Yoga is my go-to stress buster when I’m not in the mood to cook something. For the past two years I have spent New Years Eve at a Yoga Studio doing a New Years Eve yoga celebration. We meditated through the New Year instead of drinking through a countdown. I really enjoy starting the year like this, with clarity.

What is your current favorite color combination?

I love Red! Red and white look so beautiful together. I sound so Canadian.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I just recently found a company in Toronto that will dip strawberries in any topping you want. Candy, chocolate, nuts, you name it they will coat it. They also add a squeeze vile of your favourite alcohol. So you basically get to eat a delicious treat and take a shot of booze with it. Very cool! I don’t think there is really anything that I would “leave behind”. One person’s trash is another persons treasure.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

Is it too obvious for me to say “Hire a wedding planner”? Even if it is just for the day-of/month of, it will make a HUGE difference with how you enjoy your wedding day. If that answer is too cliché, than I would suggest to not just hire people based on price. Really do your research.
