Today’s interview is with Ian, the founder of Touch of Unique, a UK based company that specializes in digital wedding albums! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Way back in 1992 at the age of 18 I commenced my journey working within the print industry. In 2005, along with my two business partners, I set up a specialist digital on demand print company which has since grown into a global establishment a decade on. During that time, my love for everything digital has seen the development and launch of Touch of Unique, with the first product offering being a digital photo album within the wedding market.

How did you get into the business?

When I asked my wife Kate to marry me 2 years ago, I was thrust into the crazy wedding organisation process like all bride and grooms to be are – which photographer? Which dress? Which venue? Which colour schemes? Which honeymoon destination? There’s just so much to sort out and organise! With my print industry background it was obviously my responsibility to look at all things ‘print related’ from wedding invites to table plans to wedding album production. I decided that I simply wanted to produce something a little bit different and certainly unique for our special day, something away from the norm. For me, marrying Kate was all about our love and the memories we would make together with our family and friends, so while Kate was busying herself with her side of the wedding preparations, Touch of Unique was born from my need to capture our big day in a different and extra special way.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I love working with creative people; people that will run with an idea and bring different, interesting elements to the table. From my original idea 2 years ago to the digital album launched as it is today, there has been a massive transformation. I am extremely proud of what myself and my team have developed and built together and now we get the opportunity to share it with the world which is extremely exciting. Even though the major development of the album is over, we still get to work with different couples on every single album – this is my favourite part, along with of course hearing their comments on how special the product is once they have received it and opened it for the first time!

If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?


Our 7” touchscreen album is my favourite of the digital albums; it adds an extra immersive and engaging aspect to our photo albums. The whole reason we made them digital is to create a more emotive narrative for the user and touchscreen technology only enhances this.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?
Don’t be afraid to dream. Just because something may seem difficult, or impossible doesn’t mean that it is. Look for the unique aspect of everything and run with it; don’t follow the crowd.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I absolutely love golf and if I can sneak away for an hour or two to play a few holes then I jump at the chance! I managed to have our digital wedding albums exhibited at the British Masters at Woburn Golf Club recently due to my relationship and sponsorship with The European Tour through my print business. Although not the ideal audience of course, it enabled us the opportunity to give Touch of Unique some great exposure to the public. It was a superb feedback exercise over the week of the tournament and the positive comments received about the product were nothing short of sensational. Outside of work, and when I am not on the golf course, I spend my time with Kate and our 4 children; manic evenings and busy weekends with them remind me why I work so hard!


Any great stories from working with a client?

A young couple who were married earlier this year spring to mind. Vicki and Jamie had won our Facebook competition to receive a 7” album and they were so grateful! We wanted to keep the majority of their album a surprise so we got to know what type of wedding they had and what they were like as a couple. We then created their video, chose the design and the finishing touches. When we presented their album to them they were so delighted – they couldn’t believe how perfectly we had understood their relationship and how exciting the album made their memories for them all over again. It was great to see the look on their faces.

What makes you different from others in your field?

We pride ourselves on our quality, from the display box to the 720 HD screen itself we have always strived to make our albums outstanding and we believe we are the best at what we do. We work with trusted partners in the manufacturing process and have outstanding working relationships with them all.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

We love the new trend of having a unique hashtag for your wedding that guests can use – it makes it incredibly easy for you to find all the photos that your guests have taken throughout the day and it adds a really fun element to the day. But we’re not so fond of rehearsed wedding dances, although each to their own of course! We believe the best first dances are tender and understated.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?

Take a step back, it’s easy to get caught up in the glamour of it all, but remember why you’re getting married. Focus on how you will both experience and remember the day, and add a few little surprises for your guests to make it different. Above all cherish every single moment of the day when it arrives as it goes so quickly!
