Today’s wedding vendor interview is with Jenny MacMillan of Gathering Events, a vintage travel trailer bar service! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Gathering Events is a boutique caravan bar and pop-up bar service with a passion for creating memorable and larger than life experiences! We are based in Brisbane and service Sunshine Coast through to Byron Bay. Our #1 priority creating old fashioned good-times, with a fun and fresh twist.

Behind the scenes we are a husband and wife team, accompanied by our crew of super talented and fun bar tender professionals.

How did you get into the business?

[Jenny] After 10 years of working in event roles through Brisbane and overseas, I really wanted to create and work for a business that I whole-heatedly believed in, that created real and memorable moments. It is so exciting working for yourself, when you can wake up and make high impact decisions instantly, without going through the paperwork and meetings.

[Adam] I have really varied background, being a carpenter turned accountant, having recently graduating from an accounting degree in 2014. In the past 6 months I have moved into the business full time, and now I can combine both of my passions.

Back in 2013, Adam and I secretly organised our own ‘surprise wedding’. After undergoing stealth planning for 8 months, we realised that all of the ‘out-of-the-box’ places we wanted to celebrate didn’t have the infrastructure or facilities to host 100 guests.

After some intense venue searching, we hired a little art gallery in Brisbane which was great. For the bar however, we ended up setting up a trestle table with Ikea glassware and hiring a friend of a friend to serve the wine.

From here, it really got us thinking, and after lots of day dreaming and sketching, we came up with our caravan bar concept. We wanted to create a beautiful, yet practical bar experience that could pop up anywhere, at anytime. We now get so excited when we get hired to service and activate the most unlikely of spaces such as car parks, warehouses, rural fields and parks. Now, we can help couples like us set up a bar with experienced bar tenders, crystal glassware, and all the equipment they could dream of – now more running to Dan Murphies for extra ice or forgetting bottle openers.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I love the special moments I have with our couples, and I love seeing them finally relax and enjoy their day after all the hard work and hours they put into the planning.

I also love that we get to travel to beautiful parts of the world. We like to road-trip far and wide from Brisbane to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Byron Bay.

If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?

Our mobile vintage caravan bar! Every element of the caravan has been debated (sometimes for days), deliberated and delegated, to guarantee that memorable celebrations are had by all. Our mobile caravan is the ultimate life of the party, and knows how to keep guests entertained.

We love how our little retro caravan bar can become the life of the party, and how we can transform any space into an amazing one, such as warehouses, farms and carparks.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?

Create original ideas, believe in them, and believe that your skills will bring them to life. Also surround yourself by inspiring and positive friends, family and role models. Hustle hard!

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

We have two Airedale Terriers who keep us grounded and entertained with lots of walks and play time. Having such a social job, I love time spent reading and relaxing. To make sure we get out of the office bubble, we also do our weekly bikram yoga sessions which are amazing!

What makes you different from others in your field?

At Gathering Events, we believe in the magic of events, and believe that the real magic comes from people. From the moment we meet our couples, we want to create a beautiful experience and journey that they will remember. From creating their custom bar menu and signature cocktails, to pouring their toasting champagne on the big day, we make sure every element is taken care of.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

We have a huge weakness for all things copper! We are also inspired by the shift of couples selecting unique and out-of-the-box wedding spaces that brings meaning to the celebration.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?

Make sure you lock in and plan your priority items, the things you really want to be perfect on your big day. Make sure you roll with the waves on your wedding day and have fun.
