Today’s wedding vendor interview is with designer Colleen Corcoran, owner of The Handkerchief Shop! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My name is Colleen Corcoran and I am the owner of The Handkerchief Shop, an online store that specializes in unique, American-made handkerchiefs that can be personalized with a variety of embroidery options. I manufacturer two exclusive lines of handkerchiefs, Happy Hanky for ladies and The Hank for men.

How did you get into the business?
I created my company in 2008 after I could not find any stylish handkerchiefs to give my mom, mother in law and bridal party for my wedding three years earlier. I felt happy tears were too special for a tissue so Happy Hanky was born. My mom had given me my first handkerchief and is great at writing poems so I asked her to write the happy tears poem that is on every Happy Hanky package. When men started asking me to produce a line of handkerchiefs for them, The Hank was born (my husband, Jeff, named the line!)
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I feel very fortunate to be doing what I love and living out my passion! I love working with our brides and grooms to create handkerchiefs that are unique to them. We have had some pretty creative messages embroidered on our hankies! Also, I am a creative person and have a marketing background so I really enjoy coming up with new handkerchief styles, styling photo shoots and blogging (which I do not get to do as often as I would like!)
If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?
Both Happy Hanky and The Hank are lines that I designed exclusively for TheHandkerchiefShop.com. So a customers can create a one-of-a-kind keepsake by selecting a unique handkerchief and then personalizing it with a monogram or message.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?
It is inevitable that you are going to make mistakes when starting any kind of business. Learn from those mistakes. There is a lesson to be learned from every speed bump or hiccup along the way. I have made some of the best changes to my business based on those lessons.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love antiquing and I am a total foodie! I happy place is anywhere with my husband and our two little ones are.
Wow tough question because I am loving so much right now! I love the gold, metallics and the romantic pastels. I am also loving the bright colors that brides are incorporating into their big day.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?
The handkerchiefs that the bride, groom, mob, fob, mog, fog and bridal party use during the wedding end up being one of the most photographed accessories of the day. (think of all those happy tear moments!!) I usually will advise brides and grooms to choose a hankies that will compliment each person’s dress or suit.
