Today’s wedding vendor interview is with Chris Bajda  of Groovy Groomsmen Gifts, based in Stamford, Connecticut. Enjoy!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Mike and I are two brothers, both ex athletes with families.   We both love being part of a team and always wanted to do something together.  So about 4 years ago, we launched Groovy Groomsmen Gifts, a comprehensive one stop shop that gives grooms all the gift options they’ll need and some really good content around important things to think about as a groom approaches what is one of the biggest days of their lives.  We often see the groomsmen gift giving component overlooked given there is a whirl of other wedding details out there, but ultimately, are the flowers more important than how you appreciate some of the most important people in your life?

How did you get into the business?

My brother Mike and I have always had an entrepreneurial bug, both coming from corporate America.  I launched a wedding based site years back when I got married, so did have some general understanding of the wedding industry.  We then noticed how much was invested to the female side of the event, where the guy really didn’t have much that catered to him.  While the ladies do romanticize a bit more as to the big day, the guys are clearly a big piece of the puzzle.  We had always wanted to do something together that was tangible and that we could have fun with, so we decided to launch a site that was dedicated to the grooms out there.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

We love searching for new products, giving guys the confidence to feel great about how they are honoring their wedding party.  We are always scouring and researching new ideas, both creative and practical.  Ultimately, we feel like what we put out there is a really big part of a really important day to grooms out there and we want them to feel great about how they honor their guys.

If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?

We love gifts that are creative and will bond the guys, something that they’ll be surprised by but also be a token that they will have forever.  That in mind, our caricature, with a really cool theme, is an amazing gift.  It captures the personality of your men exponentially and they’ll never see it coming.   It’ll be a man cave centerpiece for ages.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?

Understand your customer and audience, put yourself in their shoes, understand their minds and where they are and customize your service in a way that caters to the things that they need to make it as easy as possible.  All the while, making it as fun as possible for them.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

We’re both very active, so amongst other activities, we love to ski and adventure new mountains and terrain.  I also love coaching and am very involved with my son in both baseball and basketball.   We are both big believers that being active and out in nature is part of the healthy balance of life.

Any great stories from working with a client?

Let’s just say a recent partnership connected us with the brother of a very famous athlete.  He’s an amazing guy, a great story and someone we look forward to working with in the future.

What makes you different from others in your field?

I think our selection is as unique as it gets, that fact that we are boutique and not some of these big box shops that produce a lot of gifts that have that made in China feel.  We never leave our site for dead and static, always updating and changing to stay current and in line with our customer needs.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love?

Right now, one thing that we really like is gifts in really cool personalized wooden boxes.  Guys love cool materials and there is just something about wood and opening a gift that comes in a cool wooden box that really makes the gift jump during the opening.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?

Pace yourself wisely, don’t procrastinate, ask questions, learn from others, find good resources.  There are so many options out there it can get confusing and overwhelming.  Have a plan, a budget, do as much as you can in advance.   At a month before the big day, you don’t want to be stressing or panicking, you want to have a calm that allows you to actually enjoy it all.
