Today’s interview is with designer Elizabeth Parr of Gujarati Dresses Couture, based in Sterling Heights, Michigan! Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My name is Elizabeth Parr and I am a 23 year old college student. I started my company back in 2012 based on honesty and integrity because I’ve noticed my competitors had bad reviews and did not care about their customers. I want my dresses to have the best quality hand work embroidery and fabric for anyone’s special day whether it’s for a bride, reception dress, or even to a simple event.

How did you get into the business?
I had a friend who wanted to start selling dresses together. However, due the competition of other businesses, she ended up dropping out and I started to get into the hand embroidery business to differentiate myself.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I really love customer service and helping my customers. I also like online engagement with my customers because that is degree field and I enjoy helping people out.
If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?
I like to offer a $200 store credit to those customers that show us a photo of them wearing one of my dresses. This helps my customer get a discount on their next dress and helps me promote my company with their photo. Seeing customers happy is my #1 goal.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?
I recommend listening to your customers and figuring out what they like or want. Even if they don’t buy from you, you should always try and help them out because that could leave a good impression of your company. Thus, it increases your chances of having them come back to you.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I like to go bowling, Go-Karting, watching a movie, reading, and most importantly hanging out with my fiancé.
Any great stories from working with a client?
I had one bride come to me for a bridal and reception dress. She loved my work so much she ended up referring me to all of her family and friends. Several family members of hers buy from me because I always keep them updated on the process of their dress every few days.
What makes you different from others in your field?
I make sure my customers are happy with what they receive. I always follow up with them after the delivery of the dress and I always make sure to respond to emails in only a few hours.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
I love floral designs on bridal Indian dresses with golden thread work, called Zari. These are very trendy right now and make brides look so royal and romantic!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?
Don’t keep all tasks to yourself, delegate as much as you can to relieve some stress. On your big day, just let it all flow because no matter how much you plan things will not always be perfect. Remember to enjoy your special day and have fun!
