Today we’re interviewing Krystal of Krystal Healy Photography, based in Pittsburgh, PA. Enjoy!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your company
Hello everyone! My name is Krystal! I have been photographing weddings professionally since 2010! These days the majority of the work is weddings and the photo sessions that correlate with weddings. (Engagement, boudoir, bridal showers) I photograph between 25-30 weddings per year in Pittsburgh, New Jersey, and Disney Cruise Line Weddings! I do follow my couples through life stages and am very glad when I get the opportunity to keep photographing them and their families long after the wedding day.
See the rest of the interview after the cut!
How did you get into wedding photography?
If I am honest, I got into it because I was offered free dinner to carry around a fellow photographers equipment. I was in college then, so you don’t turn down free dinner! After doing that for about a year, it sparked my interest in actually learning how to photograph! I made all my friends and family “model” for me. (Sorry about that guys!) I haven’t stopped taking pictures since!
What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?
I am a bit of a “girly” girl, so I really love the details of the wedding. Everything from the dress, shoes, invitation, flowers, centerpieces – the works! I love seeing how everyones unique vision shines through and becomes personal to them. I also really love taking my couples out just after sunset for a “night” portrait!
What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?
I can be awkward just because its a Tuesday, so this is hard to narrow down. Possibly when the groomsmen don’t pity laugh at my jokes and then it gets weird. Haha!
What is your favorite venue and why?
This is an easy one- I am obsessed with photographing weddings on the Disney Cruise Line ships. ( The Disney Dream, Wonder, Fantasy, & Magic ) It takes my two loves and combines them into what my dreams are made of. (Weddings and Disney!)
Nikon or Canon?
I am Nikon girl – through and through! Occasionally I also use my Contax 645 film camera too!
What is your dream location to shoot a wedding? — Im lucky enough to already photograph at my dream location. Though I do have a bucket list of places Id love to photograph – Ireland, Greece, Australia, also any where tropical is on my list. Id love to go back to photograph a wedding on Aruba – The renaissance hotel has a private island called Flamingo Island where they do sunset weddings and it is nothing short of amazing. Ive had the pleasure of going twice in my career and Id love to go again!
If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?
I don’t think I would choose a celebrity – I would choose my grandparents <3. I would have LOVED to see my Grandmother all dolled up and in her prime.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?
Practice patience! Things don’t go as planned sometimes and timelines get out of whack! Make sure you have the patience to work through the challenges and come out with creative images rather than getting frustrated. ALSO – look into attending a photography conference. There are two really large ones per year (Imaging and WPPI) Make it a priority to keep educating yourself!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?
Besides liking their portfolio, make sure you like them as a person! You’ll be spending more time on the wedding day with your photographer than you will with your spouse!
