Now building on his couture success, I return with a focus on one of my first true loves— the wedding dress. Designer Mychael Darwin introduces Mychael Darwin Couture, a Los Angeles-based design house designing and creating bespoke wedding gowns for brides throughout Southern California and the country.
How did you get into the business?
I was studying Art and Architecture in High School along with playing football. My High School girl-friend at the time, asked me to go roller skating with her. Before the date, she said “I’m going to need a couple hours before we go, I have to make a pair of shorts to wear,” because in her words… “I wanna look cute for skating!” I asked her “how can you make a pair of shorts in 2 hours”? She responded “easy!” …. I’ll see you in 2 hours!
And voila! In 2 hours she was back in her new bright red, hip-hugging custom made shorts! They were perfectly made, and the fit and look was beautiful! She even had a matching red belt! She had indeed accomplished her goal. I was so inspired by this feat of hers that I asked her to teach me how to sew. I thought to myself “this would be great art form, and very cool to make my own shorts, shirts, suits, jeans, everything! And as they say… the rest is history!
As a Designer, my most favorite part of the job is all the interesting people I get to meet and work with. My job as a couture dress designer encompasses people from every genre, and from all walks of life. I love the fact that my clients trust in me to bring their bridal vision to life! It’s so fulfilling to be able to take a beautiful wedding dress idea from my mind, translate it to an actual sketch, and then take it from construction to completion! It’s an exciting process! The power and thrill of creating beauty is very intoxicating to say the least. But my absolute joy is seeing the completed, finished and stunning beautiful dress on the radiant bride, who is glowing in happiness and satisfaction for her big day.
If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?
One of my favorite products services that we offer is our bespoke shoes! We are one of the very few, if not the only Wedding Dress design studio, that also offers the bride the opportunity to have her own high-heel shoes custom made, to her exact measurements and unique style for her big day. For the bride, having both, a custom dress and custom shoes is just too much happiness to bear!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to BE FOCUSED! I cannot stress this point enough. I would say to those especially in the design field, focus on the particular skill set you feel is your passion, educate yourself, pursue and follow it 1million percent! The second biggest lesson for me, (without a doubt) is to always listen to your wife, sometimes she can see what you can’t!
I’m very active in my church, the enjoyment of serving others creates a nice balance to life from the fast pace of the bridal design fashion business. Also, just hanging out with family and close friends, nice dinners and a touch of exercise! Every now and then I will catch a good movie or a great sporting event.
Any great stories from working with a client?
I have so many great, fun stories of brides and celebrity clients I have work with! But one of my favorite of all time is working as an assistant designer at the Golden Globes and working with Alicia Keys. I had never met her before. Her second album had just dropped; and she had become an instant favorite music artist of mine.
That evening at the Globes, while working in the “green room” amongst the hustle and bustle of getting all the celebrity guest ready for their stage appearance, I get a soft “tap” on my shoulder. I turn around, and its Alicia Keys! I was literally shocked speechless, because I was not expecting her there. I had no idea she was scheduled to be there that night, somehow I had missed her name on the stage list as a Globe presenter. And guess what, she was assigned to me! I just couldn’t believe it. We had a wonderful time, and I’m glad to say, she is a very nice, sweet person.

Wedding Dress 911 will turn you distress into success!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind? I really like the bridal trend of the dramatic capes in various sheer fabrics added to the wedding gown mystic. For some brides, especially for those that want an ultra-elegant, regal look, the cape is the perfect accent! Now as far as trends I would love to see brides leave behind…the Minnie-skirt bridal dress! Granted they look, beautiful on some lovely brides. But I love the tradition, elegance and romance the full length wedding dress.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?
My best advice to give Brides of couples planning their big day is to select at least 3 ideas for your wedding dress early. Decide what’s the best design line for your body shape and overall look. Once you’ve decided, stick with that idea! It will make you dress selection process so much easier! Also, if you’re having a bespoke dress made, make sure you give yourself time!
