Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Katie Eaker, Owner of Katie B. Photography, based in Atlanta, GA! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

My name is Katie and I am a wedding photographer from Augusta, Georgia. Most days you can find me binge-watching classic films, exploring bookstores and antique malls, or digging through vintage clothes racks like I’m Indiana Jones searching for the Holy Grail. I’m also a Broadway obsessed novelist and travel enthusiast who’s always looking for my next adventure. Most of all, I’m a storyteller. My photography style reflects my never-ending quest for connection… it’s authentic, real and honest.

How did you get into wedding photography?

I got into wedding photography almost immediately after starting my business. I knew it was the market I wanted to focus on because it challenges me creatively every day. There is always something new to learn when it comes to technique and I really enjoy how I get to meet new people all the time. It also combines a lot of my favorite things such as event planning, travel, love (of course), and cake!

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

One of my favorite parts of the wedding day to capture is the first look. Not all couples do it, however, it is a really special moment to witness and capture. To me, first looks capture intimacy and pure emotion while giving the happy couple a magical private moment together; a moment to reflect, soak each other in, and truly remember what the day is all about. Plus, it’s a great way to calm some of those nerves before the ceremony!

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

I have to say one of the most awkward moments I’ve experienced on the job was almost catching the bouquet while trying to photograph the bouquet toss. The bride threw it right at me without realizing and thankfully I ducked out of the way of three very determined bridesmaids right in time.

What is your favorite venue and why?

My favorite venues are usually barn venues. I grew up riding horses and traveling around to different farms to compete so I probably have some subconscious nostalgia for beautiful, rustic barns but I think they are very romantic.

Nikon or Canon?

Nikon. Always.

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

I would love to shoot a wedding in Italy. I studied in Florence in college and absolutely fell in love with everything from the language to the food to the architecture. I think shooting a wedding in Venice would be a dream come true.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

I tend to dream big so I would say Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier’s Monaco wedding in 1956. I mean, who wouldn’t want to photograph a royal wedding and Grace Kelly would make any photographer’s job a dream.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

The biggest lesson I have learned is that nothing ever goes exactly as you think it will. I am a big planner so I usually try to make a bunch of lists, check all the boxes and plan every detail down to the last minute. While it is always good to prepare and come with a solid idea of what you want to happen, I had to realize that sometimes things will change and that’s ok. The key is to have a good team around you and to learn how to be flexible while still delivering quality work.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

What I always tell my couples is that your wedding day will fly by and it will be over before you know it. Your wedding photos will be that one thing that will last forever that you can look back on to remember how you felt on your big day. They will become vessels for your memories so make sure to choose who captures those memories with care. Choose a photographer you like, trust and know they will capture your day the way you want it to be captured.
