Today’s wedding photographer interview is with husband and wife team Dewi & Vicky Clough of Fox & Bear Photography, based in Conwy, Wales! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Dewi: We are Fox & Bear Photography, a husband and wife team based in the Snowdonia Mountains of North Wales, UK. For the past 3 years, I had been working on my own as a photographer. Vicky started to assist in the post-production until the summer of 2017 when we decided to have a complete rebrand so that our business reflected both of us. We are now Fox & Bear Photography. I still do all of the photography and Vicky works on everything post-production. We love working as a team.

How did you get into wedding photography?

Vicky: Dewi studied film and television production at University. After his graduation, he worked for a few years as a freelance videographer, working largely in commercial work, with a few weddings scattered here and there. He was asked by a friend to photograph her wedding a couple of years later and it just clicked. Turns out he was supposed to be a photographer all along.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

Vicky: Ohh we love the mornings. There’s just so much excitement, tension, happy tears, and joy. It’s a special moment that many people overlook.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

Dewi: Every time I’m about to capture the most awesome shot and someone else points to me and tells everyone to smile. That’s totally fine and we love grabbing group shots, but for me, being a wedding photographer is about capturing your day as it unfolds. Natural and easy. Luckily by the end of the day, everyone is so used to my being there they don’t bat an eyelid to my presence.

What is your favorite venue and why?

Vicky: Portmeirion is an amazing wedding venue. We’ve always loved the quirky Mediterranean village on the Welsh coast. It’s just so weird and that’s what it makes such an excellent wedding venue. There are so many hidden, secluded areas, all painted in bright, wonderful colors.  There aren’t many wedding venues that boast their own beach too! What’s not to love.

Nikon or Canon?

Dewi: Sony actually. At the moment anyway. I used to shoot on a Canon 5D MKII and it was a fantastic camera. I moved to the Sony A series a few years ago simply because of the live-view viewfinder function. I love shooting on my tilt shift and the focus peaking on the viewfinder is a lifesaver. Saying that I am liking the look of the new 5D MkIV….

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

Dewi: Ohhh that’s easy; Porto, Portugal is our favorite city. We are both crazy about port and the city is just an amazing warren of hidden corners and majestic views. We’d jump at the chance to shoot a wedding in Porto.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

Dewi: It would have to be someone like Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn. They just have so much style.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Dewi: Show what you want to shoot. It’s really important to show off the weddings that you enjoy. Want more garden weddings, only show garden weddings on your portfolio. Want city weddings, show city weddings.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

Vicky: At the end of the day you’ll have each other, rings, memories and your photographs. It’s so important not only to hire a professional, but to find someone you click with. Take the opportunity to meet with your photographer before your wedding day so that you get to know each other. It will make settling into the photography that much easier.
