Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Megan of Megan Simpson Photography, based in Denver, CO! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Hey there, I’m Megan! I’m a wedding and portrait photographer who has been living this crazy, creative life since 2011. I love to photograph adventurous folks in all the beautiful locations Colorado has to offer. Bonus points if you love to laugh, enjoy corny one-liners and don’t mind climbing up random rocks to find that perfect light. When I’m not hiding behind the camera you can find me indulging in one of my mom’s many baked treats, Denzel Washington thrillers, and the occasional sweat session to compensate the aforementioned sugar!

How did you get into wedding photography?

I started as a second shooter for a very popular wedding photographer in my area. I was already passionate about portrait photography, but didn’t know if wedding photography was for me or not. A few weddings in, we shot a wedding in a downpour and I was still smiling at the end of it. That’s when I knew this job was magic!

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

I adore the first look between a couple, whether it’s during a private, pre-ceremony meeting between the two or the traditional first look down the aisle. A runner-up is the mother/son dance as I have a little baby boy and it gives me all the feels!

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

One evening I was shooting a family portrait session in a huge, open field with tall wheat. The golden hour light was just magical and as our shoot was coming to a close I realized I had offered to hold the mom’s diaper bag…and I had no idea where I had set it down! A huge field with tall grass and a lost diaper bag. I’ve never wanted a metal detector more than when I paced up and down that open space!

What is your favorite venue and why?

My favorite venue is Lone Hawk Farm in Longmont, Colorado. The farm has a garden area and an open field for ceremonies and a huge barn for receptions. Cocktail hour happens on a lawn with twinkle lights and lush greenery and farm animals are wandering around to take in the festivities. With the multiple barns, stunning bridal barn for getting ready, and all the open space, I find a new spot to photograph every time I am there!

Nikon or Canon?

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

In college, I spent time studying abroad in Cyprus. I would love to travel back to this tiny island and capture a wedding there. The people there are filled with such joy and the land and ocean backdrop is stunning.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

If I could shoot any celebrity wedding, I’d have to step into a time machine and photograph Paul Newman and Jane Woodward. I’m a sucker for an old western, believe it or not, and my all-time favorite is Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I love hearing about Paul and Jane’s fifty years of love. They were endlessly devoted to each other and their love was so timeless and romantic.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Be willing to accept and grow from criticism and feedback. No one is perfect and the only way to grow is to hear other opinions and views.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

Find a photographer you want to be friends with. A wedding photographer will spend more time with you than anyone else…on one of the biggest days of your life! You want to feel not just comfortable with them, but that something would be missing if they weren’t around!
