Today’s wedding photographer interview is with Katrina Matthews of Katrina Matthews Photography, based in Hemel Hempstead, England! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

Hi! I’m Katrina, in short I’m a documentary wedding photographer. I have been working as a wedding photographer for almost 5 years now and I have loved every minute! I always feel so honoured when a couple choose me, not only to photograph but also share, one of the most important days of their lives. The most important part of my job is to capture the images that portray the couple and their loved one as naturally as possible, telling the story of their wedding day and the individual personalities within it. A lot of couples find it really daunting to have their photo taken, which is why I work in such a natural way, allowing everyone to have fun and relax while I try to blend into the background. I don’t do any forced posing and definitely no ‘look and smile’ shots, I want the moments that I capture to have happened organically.

How did you get into wedding photography?

After graduating from university I built up a portfolio of portrait photography before landing my first photography studio job. During this time I began putting together my business, which started predominantly with portrait photography and later developed into wedding photography too. I absolutely love being a wedding photographer and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

What is your favourite part of the wedding day to capture?

I love getting photos of the bride getting ready when the excitement and emotion starts to build during the morning but my favourite part is when I get to take the couple away for some photos, just the two of them. Its usually the first time they have had any time on there own so I can capture some beautiful natural moments between them and get a little more creative with the shots too.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced while on the job?

Luckily I haven’t had any big awkward moments but there was one wedding where the registrar’s phone started ringing as the ceremony begun (she had only just mentioned the bit about turning phones on silent!). Thank god the bride and groom where super relaxed because I’m sure some couples would have had something to say about that.

What is your favorite venue and why?

Out of all the venues I have worked with my favourite has to be Elixir Shore Club in Ibiza. Not only does it have stunning views of the coast that can be enjoyed during the outdoor ceremony but it has access to a secluded beach which is incredible for photos. A perfect destination wedding venue.

Nikon or Canon?

Canon

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

After visiting Iceland for a holiday a few years ago I fell in love with the country and its landscape. I would absolutely LOVE to shoot a wedding there!

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

It is totally random but I would choose Tim Burton & Helena Bonham Carter (even though they aren’t together anymore) because they are incredibly creative and exciting people, I imagine they would have had a wedding like something out of Alice in wonderland.

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

The importance of knowing how to run a business. It a big lesson and it took me quite a while to learn but getting to grips with running your business is just as important as being a good photographer.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are looking to hire a photographer to cover their big day?

I would definitely advise couples to look through a big selection of wedding blogs and get a feel for the style they like most. Knowing what style you are looking for will really help narrow down your search. The most important thing is that you can be relaxed and feel comfortable with your photographer so get to know them a little and meet them if you can. They will spend more time with you on your wedding day then most of your family and friends.
