Today’s wedding planner interview is with Dr. Janell of Married by Medicine, based in DFW Airport, TX. Enjoy!

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I’m a doctor who happens to love all things wedding! A lot of people look at my business name and think, what does that mean? Once I explain that I am an urgent care physician by day and a rockstar wedding planner by night (and weekend), they totally get it! I believe that being a doctor is much like being a wedding planner… you have to think on your feet, adapt quickly to emergency situations, and be able to listen to and understand many different types of personalities and people.

How did you get into wedding planning?

I started wedding planning in 2005 when I was planning my own wedding during a grueling residency! The wedding planning time was my time of escape and creativity and continues to be that to this day!

What’s your favorite part of the job?

I love meeting couples and hearing the love story, knowing more about their personalities and how they met and what the engagement was like. I’m a sucker for romance and love, so to be able to hear these stories day in and day out and then visualize an event for a couple based on their unique love story is amazing!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

I love meeting couples and hearing the love story, knowing more about their personalities and how they met and what the engagement was like. I’m a sucker for romance and love, so to be able to hear these stories day in and day out and then visualize an event for a couple based on their unique love story is amazing!

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

My hobby and my passion is wedding planning! Additionally, I do some wedding photography as a second shooter with my husband. In my leisure time, I like to catch a good movie at least once a week (rom-com preferred, of course) and spend time with my husband, 2 yo, 3 dogs, and a cat!

My full-time job includes administrative duties as the medical director for a large urgent care chain in Dallas and Fort Worth. This affords me the flexibility I need to do wedding planning and be available whenever my couples need me.

What is your current favorite color combination?

My current obsession is rose gold! I love everything rose gold and metallic. I love a monotone palette with pops of metallic or a palette full of metallic! They are so in right now and can elevate any event to a more refined, romantic, and sophisticated affair.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I love the new trend of making the wedding day an experience. The focus is on making sure the guests are entertained and that it reflects the couple’s personality. If the couple loves fishing, why not a cute fishing-themed game during cocktail hour? Who says cocktail hour has to be stuffy and boring. Let’s punch it up a bit and make it an event to remember. I would love to see brides leave behind wedding traditions that they feel like they must do because it’s the right etiquette or what is expected. Do you, boo, and be the anomaly!

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

Rest assured that your wedding will be beautiful. As long as your true, unique love story is on display and the love is genuine, the rest of the event will fall into place. Do not stress the small stuff… that’s what I’m here for! Instead, focus on the feelings and emotions that you will experience as you marry the love of your life!
