Today’s wedding planner interview is with Veronica Foster, Owner and Creative Director of Behind The Scenes Inc based in Greensboro, NC! Enjoy:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.

I am a mother to three beautiful girls, I serve on PTA, Girl Scouts and work with my Church.  I started my company in 2002 after being laid off from the only other job that I ever loved.  Since then Behind The Scenes Inc has grown and changed from small low budget weddings to large extravagant galas. I love the challenge of each and every event.

How did you get into wedding planning?

Before I started Behind The Scenes Inc I planned corporate events, trainings, holiday parties, executive trips, etc. Once I was laid off I decided that I wanted to do something a little different but still plan events so I started Behind The Scenes Inc to plan weddings.

What’s your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part of the job is the balancing of the budget the designing of the event, finding those little meaningful pieces that make each wedding unique.  My favorite part of the actual wedding is looking at the brides face right before she goes down the aisle.  Is she nervous? Calm?

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?

When you’ve planned weddings for 15 years you learn a lot of lessons, and most of them you’ve learned the hard way.  I would say to new planners – get educated and not just anywhere or from “other planners”. Start your business off on the right foot. Take business classes and join an Association, one that has a good sisterhood of other planners that you can lean on.

What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?

I love to read and I also love my Cricut! I love making different crafts or just enjoying quiet time and reading a good book.

Any great stories from working with a client?

I have a ton of great stories from beautiful love stories to horror stories that will leave you quaking in your sheets! One of my favorites is a young couple came to me and they didn’t have much of a budget at all $5,000 usually I would refer them to someone else but I really liked them so I convinced them to do a destination wedding with Sandals Resorts.  It ended up that they paid $750 for their flights and had so many guests attend that the wedding and their honeymoon were free!  They were so thankful and still send me referrals to this day!

What is your current favorite color combination?

Today I like the rose gold and a deep purple color combination.

Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?

I wish that the “rustic” look would end.  It seems that some brides think it means “old and dirty” so no, I don’t do rustic weddings like that.

What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?

Normally I would say hire a planner, but after the last few years I say hire a real wedding planner – not a hobbyiest.  It is important in both your event and your planning experience and hopefully to the future of your marriage.  A good planner will not only keep you on budget but also assist you in creating the memories that will last your lifetime.
