Tell us a bit about yourself and your company.
My name is Melody and I am the owner + lead planner of Events by Melody based out of Minneapolis, Minnesota. I have a background in marketing & communications, but I always knew I’d someday start my own business… and, well, here I am! I started the company in early 2016. and since then we’ve grown significantly. In 2016, our first year in business, we did 11 weddings, and in n 2017, we did a whopping 41 weddings! The growth of our company has been so exciting! What started with just me has turned into two additional lead event coordinators, a communications assistant, and a handful of assistant event coordinators. Not to mention, my team is pretty awesome!
How did you get into wedding planning?
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been a savvy businesswoman and event planner at heart. I would always jump at the opportunity to help plan any type of event – weddings, corporate holiday parties, birthday parties – you name it. At the same time, I always knew I would own my own business one day, but I wasn’t sure what that was. The question was always, “Where do I start?” It all started when I was at that age where all my friends were getting married and I was helping then plan, coordinate and execute their weddings. My friends joked and told me I should start my own event planning business. A few months later, I got engaged and started planning my own wedding. During that process, I was also playing around and made my own company logo and website – you know, for fun. I got married in April 2016 in Cancun and a few weeks after I got back home, I officially launched my website and went live. I had initially started the company marketing toward corporate events, however, that’s when brides started reaching out asking if I planned and/or coordinated weddings. The answer was simply – YES!
What’s your favorite part of the job?
I love everything about weddings. From meeting with a couple for the very first time, to helping with the planning and/or design, to coordinating the wedding and setting everything up – I love it all! The best part is walking away at the end of the night and knowing our team made a difference… another happy couple in the books! Of course, we couldn’t do it without all of the amazing local vendors here in Minneapolis! I have enjoyed meeting and working with some these amazing vendors, many who have become more than a vendor, but a friend, too. Not to mention, most of the couples we work with become our friends, too.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding planners just getting started?
Start your company out slow and really try to find a way to differentiate your brand. There is so much competition especially with other wedding planners in the area, and at the end of the day one might say, “but they all do the same thing.” Take the time to attend networking events where you can meet other local vendors, and also be sure to attend wedding fairs, venue open houses and seize any opportunity that comes your way! It may be frustrating in the beginning and you might wake up some days with doubts, but keep pushing and striving for the best.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
As my husband would say, “Your hobby is Events by Melody”, and he is SO right. It’s a true blessing to say I can wake up every day and love what I do! But on a serious note, I enjoy traveling, drinking a Dunn Brothers Coffee (mocha) every single day, and spending quality time with my husband and our German Shepherd and two cats.
Any great stories from working with a client?
Every couple comes with a great story. While weddings are also very similar in terms of the timeline of the day, they are also very different. As I always say, every wedding is different. From the couple themselves, to the venue and vendors, to the color scheme and design – every wedding makes for a great story in its own way!
What is your current favorite color combination?
I love all the latest trends — neutrals, greenery and gold are some of my favorite colors for a wedding. However, it depends on the season and my favorite color combination could change by the week! For instance, I just helped a bride with her wedding colors last weekend and we went with mauve, eggplant, navy blue and gold. Perfect for a fall wedding in Minnesota!
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
If you know me, then you know I have a huge sweet tooth. I absolutely LOVE wedding desserts and one of my favorite trends right now is DONUTS! Whether you stack them on a platter or put them on a donut wall… there is something just so fun about this trend! Not to mention, guests love it too!
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning?
Try to stay calm and not stress over it too much. I was once a bride myself so I can totally relate. It’s hard not to get caught up in the family drama, details, and wanting that Pinterest-perfect wedding. However, at the end of the day it should be about one thing – you and your fiancé. Oh, and hire a wedding planner! If hiring a wedding planner isn’t in the budget, a day of coordinator is your next best thing!
