Today we’re interviewing the lovely Emily of Emily A Howell Calligraphy + Design! Take it away Emily:

How did you get started doing wedding invitations?

My husband and I were in the middle of a cross-country move when I realized that I needed to make a change and do something creative for my work. I had made our own invitations a few years earlier when we got married so I knew that I loved the process! After working with a few brides, learning about their weddings and trying to come up with unique and special invitations to match, I knew I was in the right business!

What is your favorite color combination?

How can you choose! Right now I am loving a moody slate, navy, and grey with pops of blush and gold.
What is the most unique invitation you have designed?
I recently did an invitation for a wedding that was on an island in the Boston Harbor. We did a corresponding map complete with little waves and boats in the harbor, and a lobster indicating where dinner would take place. It was super fun to draw up because we got super cute and fun with it! It also stretched my aesthetic a bit since I tend to be more classic and simple but I am told the guests loved them!

Do you have a favorite typeface?

I am a sucker for a classic font like Garamond. It looks great in all caps, in italics, or just sentence case!

What is the most bizarre request you have received?

In addition to wedding invitations, I also do custom calligraphy quotes for people to frame for their houses or gifts or whatever. There have been some very strange quotes that I have done for people but I don’t ask questions!

Ampersand or the word “and?”

I don’t think I can choose! I think there’s a time and place for both!

Any advice for brides?

Get started on invitations early, especially if you want them custom designed. They tend to take more time than people think and rushing definitely adds stress and takes away time for creativity. I would also say, pay for the addressing and assembly! It will save you a lot of stress and time and it will look better to have had them done professionally.

Do you offer more than just stationery?

Yes! I specialize in calligraphy so anything that you can write on, I can calligraph on! I love doing signage for day-of wedding goods but I also love to do non-wedding related stuff too like custom quotes, fabric banners, return address stamps, etc.
