Today’s wedding stationer interview is with designer Nicole Basque of Prim & Popping, based in Ottawa, Ontario! Enjoy:

How did you get started doing wedding invitations?

As a graphic designer and being part of a very large family, let’s just say it wasn’t even an option! But I loved it from the very first design and have grown from a single wedding invitation to creating branded wedding stationery packages for couples and am on a roll!

What is your favorite color combination?

Black & white with an unexpected pop of colour! I just love the contrast of black and white patterns and then adding in colours like emerald or blush, just makes the stationery stand out!

What is the most unique invitation you have designed?

I like designing invitations that have surprising and unpredictable elements. An example would be an invite that I’ve designed that had the invitation suite being held together with a rivet. It’s those little details that really allow the couples to stand apart from your everyday wedding invitations!

Do you have a favorite typeface?

I can’t help but use Bodoni… in caps! It’s always so classic and strong and elevates the invitations! You can almost always mix and match it with a quirky script fonts too!

What is the most bizarre request you have received?

Honestly, I really topped the “bizarre” bar with my own wedding; creating cement candle holders & using PVC pipes as an alter… so I have yet to encounter a request that I haven’t loved! Bring on the uniqueness and couple’s individuality!!

Ampersand or the word “and?”

Both! it really depends on the style of the invite. If we are going traditional then I’ll keep with the written out word but I love being able to find a gorgeous script ampersand to use on an invitation to add that additional visual element!

Any advice for brides?

My advice would be to grab a blank piece and paper and write down colours, styles, themes, people, places… anything that you love and inspires you! This is a great start to begin designing a wedding that you’ll truly love and be connected with throughout the entire planning  process!

Do you offer more than just stationery?

I do! And that’s the best part about Prim & Popping, it’s bringing together a cohesive and branded stationery package for the couple! I love starting at the beginning with invitations and then create matching table numbers, menus, wedding signage, cake toppers & personalized banners! Really, if you have an idea.. I want to help you design it!
