How did you get into the business?
I was previously an Education Director and Event Coordinator for a large church in Charleston. Directing weddings came as part of this job as well, so when this business became available, it seemed like a great fit for me.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
People!! I absolutely love all of the friendships and business contacts I have made over the last 10 years in this position. I enjoy the happiness weddings provide.
If you could pick one unique product or service offering, which would be your favorite, and why?
I always aim to make sure my clients (vendors) are getting all they need from the shows and Association. If they are successful, then I am successful. It’s a win, win for all of us.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned, and would pass along to others just getting started in your field?
In any business field, I think the most important thing is patience. Many expect to go into their own business and make lots of money in a month. You have to prove yourself and your integrity and sometimes that takes lots of time. The old adage says “the customer is always right” and that isn’t too far off the mark. I think there are times when you have to go above and beyond to work with someone. Kindness pays off even when the other person doesn’t seem all that kind at the time.
What are your hobbies or non-work-related activities?
I love decorating! If I had the time, it would be my second job for sure. My husband and I love taking short road trips and finding out of the way places we’ve never been to. We also enjoy movies, the beach and pool. Oh…and our grandkids. What a joy! (All of this not necessarily in this order. :)
Any great stories from working with a client?
Nothing specific, but again I have met some of my dearest friends in this industry. Ones that would be there for you at the drop of a hat.
What makes you different from others in your field?
I truly want to see everyone succeed and prosper. It’s very important to me. This is not just a job for me, it’s a mission.
Are there any trends that you absolutely love or would love to see brides leave behind?
Most trends come and go… and a few stay. I think the most important thing is that a wedding day is for the bride and groom. I enjoy seeing their dreams come true and not so much what his/her mom wants for them. Each wedding day should be unique to the bride and groom and have their own signature attached to it.
What tips or advice can you give to couples who are in the midst of planning their big day?
Really do your best to enjoy the planning. It can get stressful if you allow it to. When that happens, take a day away from it. Totally. Don’t even talk about the wedding. Take your fiancé and go out for a walk on the beach, have dinner out, or treat yourself to a spa day if you can. It’s all going to be fine. In the end, your goal should be to be married to the person that you love the most. Keep this as your focus. The wedding day is just one day.
