Today’s real wedding comes to us from Megan of North Shore Weddings & Events based in Chicago, IL! Here’s more about this wonderful wedding from Kate, the lovely bride:
Originally, Bryan and I had wanted a beach destination wedding somewhere warm, like Mexico. When we realized it would be difficult for everyone we love to make it there, I still had my heart set on a wedding by the water. So being from Chicago, I set my sights on the next best thing — Lake Michigan! We had been to Harbor Country together several times and thought the setting would be perfect.

When we saw Gintaras, we knew we had found the place. Most of our guests were from the Chicago area, and we loved that a good portion of them were able to stay on-site with us at the resort and make a weekend of it. Many more stayed at nearby hotels and bed and breakfasts. On Friday night, we had a casual party outside on the lawn with pizza and Italian beef (to bring some Chicago to Michigan!) and drinks. After a brilliant sunset, we headed down to the beach for a bonfire complete with s’mores. The Friday night event really gave us a chance to spend more time with our guests and catch up with friends and family we hadn’t seen in awhile.
We couldn’t have asked for better weather on our wedding day! The sun glinted on the lake, and it was warm, but not too hot — perfect for our outdoor ceremony overlooking the lake. Harbor Country has a number of vineyards, and we love wine, so we incorporated some of that in the form of wine boxes topped with flowers lining the aisle, as well as two wine barrels framing us as we exchanged our vows. We also had a wine tasting table with wines from the region for guests as they arrived, and it stayed open throughout cocktail hour immediately following the ceremony.
Bryan brews beer with two of his friends, so in place of a signature cocktail, we offered two home-brewed beer selections, The Ginger Bride, a ginger Saison named for my red hair, and Something Blue, a blueberry wheat, using Michigan berries. They even featured custom labels designed by one the brewers who is also an artist. Cocktail hour was also outdoors, and guests were able to enjoy the awesome lake view and even wander down to the beach.
After dinner, everyone danced the night away, both inside and outside. Our DJ even agreed to stay an extra half hour because everyone was having so much fun. We had hand-picked a song list and left it up to the DJ to order and pace our selections, so we were really happy that everyone enjoyed it. Instead of cake, we opted for pies in several fruit flavors, including Michigan Four Berry, served with vanilla ice cream. The next day over pastries and coffee, everyone told us they didn’t want to leave! It was an amazing weekend that we’ll never forget.
