Today’s real wedding comes to us all the way from New Zealand. Dave Garratt from Von Photography shared this beautiful, yet laid-back wedding with us and we’re glad he did! Here’s what the lovely bride had to say about the big day:
Matt and I met at the local pub when I was out for a girls night, Matt was with a couple of friends. Because I had mentioned to my friends that I thought Matt was cute, one of them thought it would be funny to steal Matts hat and run away with it – forcing me talk to him and retrieve his hat – so mature!
See more after the cut!
We had been together eight years when that same “hat-stealing” friend was back from the UK visiting, we were casually looking at rings at the jewellers (as girls do) and Matt was doing his best to act disinterested – but secretly he was taking notes.
It is VERY hard to get one over me and he managed to sneak out and get the ring we had been looking at – he asked me to marry him on my 30th birthday – it was the best birthday present ever!
When planning the wedding we wanted something that was us and reflected our personalities, we also knew we had a lot of guests who were travelling from across the ditch and around NZ to attend so keeping things casual and laid back was important so all our friends and family could enjoy the day with no pressure or stress.
We decided on the Otaihanga Boating Club as our venue, it’s a beautiful spot where we walk our dogs and it basically provided a blank canvas to work with.
There were only a few close calls on the day. The Best Man thought he had lost one of the rings and the Bridesmaids wished there was a little less wind with their dresses being so short!
We didn’t really have a theme we just did what we liked and what looked good…. I love DIY so many of the elements were hand made. For example I didn’t want fresh flower bouquets so I made them from handmade fabric flowers and brooches.
After a nerve wracking week of bad weather (and everyone being glued to the met service website 24/7) the weather finally cooperated the morning of the wedding.
Everything went to plan on the day everyone looked great, I absolutely loved my lace dress that my Mum bought for me but as for the accompanying veil – the wind had other ideas about that so it was ditched at the 11th hour, literally as we were getting in the bridal car!
As with most weddings the focus can become all about the bride and what she wants – we wanted to make sure Matt was represented in the wedding as much as possible as it was his day as well.
Matt is a huge sports fan so the tables were named after some of his favourite sports teams and the ring box was made from a real cricket ball that my dad spent hours cutting in half perfectly.
Matt really likes the button holes made from book pages so I handmade these as well. We also made bunting, backdrops, our own table settings and more. My sister organised the table flowers and did amazing rustic garden picked arrangements.
The outdoor games and DIY photo booth were a huge hit and was great entertainment for the guests while we were away having photos taken.
For the food we went with a BBQ buffet, followed by a dessert table which included lots of yummy treats including a slice that was a recipe of my late nana.
The day itself turned out perfectly thanks to the vendors we chose who were so amazing and the help of friend & family who made the day what it was. We wouldn’t have changed a thing!!
