Today’s venue walkthrough is of the beautiful Day Block Event Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota and our host is Kassie Harrison, the event agent! What a gorgeous venue. Enjoy:
Tell us a bit about your venue:
People often ask us about the name. The current owner renovated the building in 2006. He wanted to preserve the history of this unique space. It was built in 1883 by Leonard Day- who at the time also owned the street surrounding it- Day Block! We’re located in Downtown Minneapolis. The Event Center is on the 2nd floor, the Day Block Brewing Company is on the 1st floor.
What makes your business unique?
We are not your typical banquet hall. Clients choose our space because it has that desirable urban-chic vibe. The exposed brick and metal give the space an industrial feel, while the natural lighting creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The vintage doors, high ceilings, and wooden beams also add a lot of charm; event pictures always turn out beautifully! Our event space also offers a balcony which overlooks the beautiful Minneapolis skyline and the new Minnesota Vikings stadium!
The Day Block Brewing Company offers wonderful catering options for the event center (try their bacon flights and beer). However, a great selling feature of our venue is that we allow outside catering and alcohol. Many spaces will tell their guests which caterer they can use and place minimums on the amount you have to spend, but at Day Block we want our couples to have the option to choose their caterer based on their personal preferences as well as their budget.
Do you target any particular niche?
We tend to draw the Pinterest-loving DIY bride or groom that we can assist in letting their imagination run wild! Since there are so many great structural elements, our space doesn’t need a lot of decorating to look amazing. We love seeing couples add their own personal touches to the space. Every wedding looks unique! Since the 1st floor of our building is a restaurant and brewery, it appeals to a lot of couples- especially grooms! The brewery is one of the leaders in the craft beer movement in the Twin Cities! The downtown loving couple will also appreciate the fact that we are within walking distance of iconic Minneapolis attractions, such as the Stone Arch Bridge, Mill District, and Gold Medal Park, which make for great photo opportunities.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of my job is getting the opportunity to be a part of a couple’s best day of their lives! Everyone is so excited and that energy is contagious. I love the different dynamics that between the couples families and guests; no two weddings are the same. Getting to hear people’s speeches is also pretty fun. You tend to learn a lot about the couple from their best man and maid of honor!
How do you help couples customize their weddings?
To help in customizing the wedding, I listen to the couple’s needs and try my best to accommodate all of their wishes. I love being a part of the creative process and I have gained a lot of good ideas for future couples.
Do you have any funny stories about a past wedding or event?
I won’t name names but believe me- I’ve got stories. Each day has its own humor. Weddings bring many different personalities together and that’s all part of the fun!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned?
I’ve learned that no matter how much money someone spends on the wedding- the outcome is the same. You’re married! The most touching and meaningful weddings can be the simplest. In the end it’s all about love.
Any tips for brides on the hunt for a venue?
Don’t be afraid to ask a ton of questions on the tour! This is your chance to really get a feel for their policies and be able to determine if the venue is the right fit. Try to picture in your mind what your perfect day would look like. Choose a place that fits your vision and allows your personality to come through. Picking a place that is flexible is also great. Start with your budget and make a list of priorities that are most important to you- then don’t sweat the small stuff! Finding the right venue is almost like finding the right dress: when you know, you’ll know!
